Profile Picture Sizes for Every Platform

Profile picture sizes are square on every major platform and cropped to a circle on all of them — but the pixel dimensions vary from 128 × 128 on Discord to 1080 × 1080 on WhatsApp. This chart lists the upload size, the size actually displayed, and the crop shape for thirteen platforms, so you can export one master file that works everywhere.

One File That Works Everywhere

Export a Single 1080 × 1080 Master

The largest profile picture any major platform accepts as its recommended size is WhatsApp's 1080 × 1080 px. Export one square master at that size and every other platform can downscale from it without you re-exporting. Downscaling is lossless in perceived quality; upscaling a 165 × 165 Pinterest avatar to fill a Twitch profile is not.

Design for the Circle, Not the Square

Every platform in the chart above crops to a circle. That means the corners of your square file are thrown away — roughly 21% of the image area. Keep the subject centred and leave a margin of at least 10% of the width on all sides, so nothing important sits in a corner that gets clipped.

Check It at the Displayed Size, Not the Upload Size

You upload 800 × 800 to YouTube, but viewers see it at 98 × 98 — smaller still beside comments. A logo with a tagline underneath is unreadable at that scale. Shrink your design to 100 px wide and look at it before you commit: if you cannot tell what it is, simplify it.

Which Platforms Need a Separate File

  • WhatsApp (1080 × 1080) — the one platform that genuinely benefits from the full-size master
  • TikTok (720 × 720) — upload large; TikTok's downscaling is aggressive and soft results are common
  • Discord (128 × 128 minimum) — upload at 1024 × 1024 anyway; the minimum is a floor, not a target
  • Pinterest (165 × 165) — so small that fine detail and any text will disappear entirely

File Format and Size

  • PNG for logos, flat colour, and anything with text — sharper edges, no compression artefacts
  • JPG for photographs of people — smaller files with no visible quality loss at these dimensions
  • Keep it well under any stated limit — YouTube allows 4 MB but a 1080 × 1080 avatar should be a few hundred kilobytes at most
  • Animated GIF is only supported on Discord (with Nitro); everywhere else it will be flattened to a still frame

Profile Picture vs Cover or Banner

The avatar is only half of a profile. Each platform pairs it with a much wider header image — 2560 × 1440 on YouTube, 1500 × 500 on X, 1584 × 396 on LinkedIn, 1200 × 600 for a WhatsApp Business banner. Those are covered on each platform's own spec page, and side by side on the social image sizes comparison.
