iOS Design Guidelines
Key Design Principles:
- Use Points (pt), not Pixels: 1pt = 2px on standard Retina, 3px on Pro models
- Design for Multiple Sizes: iPhone 17 Pro Max (6.9"), Pro (6.3"), SE (4.7")
- Safe Areas: Account for Dynamic Island, rounded corners, home indicator
- 3× Assets: Provide @3x images for Pro models (460 PPI)
- 2× Assets: Standard iPhones and SE use @2x
- Landscape Mode: Support both portrait and landscape orientations
Understanding iPhone Screen Specifications
Retina Display Explained
Apple's "Retina" branding means pixel density is high enough that individual pixels are indistinguishable at normal viewing distance (typically 300+ PPI for phones).
Points vs. Pixels
iOS uses points (pt) for design, not pixels:
- iPhone SE: 1pt = 2px (326 PPI, @2x)
- iPhone 17/16/15: 1pt = 3px (460 PPI, @3x)
- Example: A 44pt button = 88px on SE, 132px on iPhone 17 Pro
Design Resolution
When designing for iOS apps:
- Design in points: iPhone 17 Pro Max = 956 × 440 pt
- Export at 3×: 2868 × 1320 px for Pro models
- Use Auto Layout: Apps should adapt to all screen sizes
Safe Areas & Dynamic Island
All modern iPhones (except SE) have:
- Dynamic Island: Top center cutout for Face ID (avoid placing critical UI here)
- Rounded Corners: Design within safe area to avoid clipping
- Home Indicator: Bottom gesture bar (34pt tall) — don't place buttons here
