Understanding Color Formats

HEX (Hexadecimal)

HEX colors use a 6-digit code preceded by a hash symbol (#). Each pair of digits represents red, green, and blue values in base-16 (0-9, A-F). For example, #6c5ce7 breaks down to: 6c (red), 5c (green), e7 (blue).

RGB (Red, Green, Blue)

RGB uses three values from 0 to 255 to represent the intensity of red, green, and blue. For example, rgb(108, 92, 231) means 108 red, 92 green, and 231 blue.

RGBA (Red, Green, Blue, Alpha)

RGBA extends RGB by adding an alpha channel for transparency. The alpha value ranges from 0 (fully transparent) to 1 (fully opaque). Example: rgba(108, 92, 231, 0.8) is 80% opaque.

HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness)

HSL represents colors using:

  • Hue: The color type (0-360 degrees on the color wheel)
  • Saturation: Color intensity (0-100%, 0% is gray)
  • Lightness: How light or dark (0-100%, 0% is black, 100% is white)

HSLA (Hue, Saturation, Lightness, Alpha)

HSLA adds an alpha channel to HSL for transparency control, just like RGBA. Example: hsla(248, 73%, 63%, 0.8).

When to Use Each Format

  • HEX: Most common in CSS and web design. Compact and widely supported.
  • RGB/RGBA: Best when you need precise color control or transparency.
  • HSL/HSLA: Ideal for creating color variations. Easy to adjust brightness or saturation.
