WhatsApp Business Banner Size & Image Dimensions

The WhatsApp Business banner size is 1200 × 600 px — a 2:1 landscape image that sits at the top of your business profile. Catalogue product photos are 1080 × 1080 px square, and Status ads are 1080 × 1920 px vertical. Every WhatsApp Business image dimension is below, with the safe zones and file limits that decide whether your artwork survives WhatsApp's compression.

Designing the WhatsApp Business Banner

Why 1200 × 600 and Not Something Taller

The banner is a fixed 2:1 landscape strip. Supplying a taller image does not give you more visible space — WhatsApp centre-crops it to 2:1 and discards the rest. Build the artwork at exactly 1200 × 600 px so you control what stays in frame rather than letting an automatic crop decide.

Keep the Message in the Middle

Different devices trim slightly different amounts from the left and right edges of the banner. Treat the outer 10% on each side as expendable: put your logo, offer, or strapline in the central portion, and use the edges for background texture or colour that can be lost without anyone noticing.

Banner Text Has to Survive Compression

WhatsApp re-encodes uploaded images as JPEG. Thin type, tight letter-spacing, and small text on a busy photograph all pick up visible artefacts. Use bold weights at a generous size, and place text over a flat colour block rather than directly over a photo wherever you can.

Banner vs Profile Picture

The banner and the profile picture do different jobs. The circular 1080 × 1080 profile picture is the one customers see in their chat list — it should be your mark or logo, nothing more. The 1200 × 600 banner is the one they see after opening your profile, and it has room for a product shot, an offer, or opening hours.

Catalogue and Status Ad Images

Catalogue Products: Square, Consistent, Well Lit

  • 1080 × 1080 px square — anything non-square is cropped to a square thumbnail in the catalogue grid
  • 500 × 500 px is the floor, not a target — smaller uploads look soft on modern phones
  • Up to 10 images per product — use them for angles, scale, and detail shots
  • The first image is the thumbnail — it is the only one most customers will ever see
  • Keep backgrounds consistent across the catalogue; a plain white or single-colour background makes the grid look deliberate rather than assembled

Status Ads: Respect the 250 px Bands

Status ads run at 1080 × 1920 px, but WhatsApp's own interface occupies the top and bottom 250 px. That leaves a safe zone of 1080 × 1420 px in the middle for anything the viewer needs to read. Artwork can fill the full frame — text and logos cannot.

File Formats and Limits

  • JPG for photographs and product shots — smaller files, and WhatsApp converts to JPEG regardless
  • PNG for logos and flat graphics with hard edges or text
  • MP4 for Status ad video, 6 to 30 seconds
  • Compress before uploading — sending a lightly optimised file gives a better result than letting WhatsApp compress a huge one

Avoiding Compression on Product Images

For images you send directly to a customer — a spec sheet, a price list, a detailed product photo — attach the file as a document rather than as a photo. WhatsApp leaves documents untouched, so the recipient gets the original pixels. The full compression rules are covered on the main WhatsApp image sizes page.
